We are ready to install the gas tank in our 31 Tudor.I would appreciate some advice as to where the welting goes.A picture would be great if possible.I am located on Cape Breton Island on the East Coast of Canada.

One piece goes from one side of the tank, all the way to the other side, starting and ending at the rear edge of the hood. At the sides, it runs between the cowl and the tank, and in the center, between the tank and that filler strip that runs right under the windshield. There are various tricks for getting the welting to stay in place. You will need to pre-cut holes or slots for the bolts that hold the filler strip and tank to the dash rail. You will also need to make some notches in the flat part of the welting to help it go around the corners.

I think Marco has a detailed photo that shows how the front end of the welting is finished. The last inch or so, where it passes under the cowl band, has the core removed, and it serves as an anti-squeak under the front top corner of the cowl.

I installed my gas tank and welt on my 31 sport coupe last week like this. I stappeled the welt to a long stick and painted it with single stage urethane which is very flexible. I then made a series of cuts in the welt flange where it has to make a sharp bend on each side. Then I contact cemented the welt flange to the tank so the welt bead would be where I wanted it to be and wouldn't move. I trimmed off the extra length of the welt and installed the tank and the sheet metal piece above it. looks good.

Thanks for the great advice. It's wonderful to have
access to this great forum with so many guys ready to help.

On some club's web site there is a nice, detailed photo essay that shows how half a dozen guys, with the help of some refreshments, can install a gas tank in only four hours or so. :-)
Maybe somebody can remember where it is...

I took these pics as a reference, showing how the welting ends by being chopped off inboard of the hood lacing. This is on the most original looking specimen I've seen.
(the 30 roadster at the 2010 MAFCA meet)

As an afterthought...how do I really KNOW the tank wasn't replaced at one point of it's life? ...and maybe this ISN'T the way welting should end?
....I really don't know, although judging from the many original details I found on this relic, it's very likely this is how Henry did it with the welting continuing right to the front of the cowl where it meets the firewall.

Maybe someone with more experiance will wade in and confirm if my pictures show the correct original method?
....I would like to know myself...Thanks!
