Gas tank welting

I will apologize in advance for the misspellings; I wear a 17 ring and the didgets don't always fit in the space provided.
I have read that the gas tank welt is/is not painted, which is correct? If the tank is painted first how the heck do you get it back in the car without damage to the paint? The Roadster is going to be black this week, The toughest thing about the restoration is deciding on a color, I hope it will be on there a long time. Regards, E LaBrash

The gas tank and welting were originally painted as an assembly. There are a number of ways to do the job. I personally prefer to paint the tank and welt separate from the cowl. It is much easier for me to stripe the tank (deluxe versions) while it is out of the car. I then assemble the parts with care. Gar Williams

Truer words were never spoken Elmer!! That is about the biggest thing my customer's agonize over. We do color sprayouts on beaded sheetmetal showing the color, the trim color, and even the pinstripe just to help them out (and generally do 2 or 3 different color combinations too). I finally just tell them that we need to know 30 minutes before we roll it into the spray booth. I have one that is ready to roll into the spray booth right now, ....and has been waiting for almost a month! Guess what the hold-up is?

Thanks Brent, Gar; I had a bunch of cubscouts and parents in the shop Monday looking at the old car, restoration process, and some of the work involved. I had a friends Roadster sitting next to the body for comparison -- that really gave me a boost to get mine done. Later, Elmer

There are many different styles of welting materials out there. If I wanted "The Best" who sells it, maybe not "Fine Piont" quality, but top end driver quality.

Roy Nacewicz makes the good stuff that actually holds paint. I prefer to paint the "interior" part of the tank and have it pinstriped before installation. The exterior and the welt get painted with the tank installed.
