Gas tank patch

My tank is leaking at the column, what if i was to have a steel plate welded to over the rivvets and it sealed of real good with a thick weld?
Would that stop my leak?

remove the tank and the steering colom bracket then weld the rivets closed and any cracks you find and use the late model a dash support bracket, there are other ways to fix the leak but welding is the permanate way,

I'll find out soon enough, I plan on removing my bracket tomorrow and welding up the rivets. I've been looking for a blue dye product my friends dad used to check his welds, a product he used to check pipe welds for leaks before the days of scanning and testing. I thought it would be handy to use before I prime and paint my tank.

I had a tank fixed but I took it to a radiator shop. They did not weld the tank but used solder. I can not remember what they called the process. It is still holding gasoline today.

One thing to remember guys, his tank has a (failed/failing) sealer inside so any heat that will be used will likely cause that sealer to burn & flake.

.

Took mine to the radiator shop last spring and had it soldered. Hasn't leaked since and I use the original bracket. I would worry about what effect the intense heat of welding might do to the tank where you can't see.

phew ! thats what i need to read, more on these tank issues and the correct way to go about protecting this internal "terne plate finish", something nobody can really see.
I know the lower right corner of this '29 tank needs repair and brazing was suggested by someone, now i read soldering is to be the correct way of going about it, thanks.
as for my tank mounted steering column bracket, it's been cut or drilled off just where it would meet the steering column. seems to be no damage to the tank or it 's seal.
but as for this '31 type dash mount bracket, Jeff/Illinois, have you got a picture available of how that may look before I attempt to repair what somebody hacked up prior to my owning ?
Thanks.

dont have a pic but the 31 bracket will look close to the original 29,except it will bolt to the colum and bottom of the dash and not to the bottom of the tank

Yes, I agree with installing the 31 steering column bracket to the dash. Then smooth of the surface of the tank where the old bracket was and fill any holes or cracks with clear epoxy. Use only epoxy as it is both strong and compatible with gasoline.
