Gas tank mush inside

My son now has our family 1940 Mercury fordor Convertible sedan(oneof 978 produced in America and 77 built in Canada for export.) . I bought it in 1956 off the street in Hoboken for $25. We hung an 8Ba and good ****** in and chased girls. It had no top, wrong seat, dents and bad paint. The best I could do was 7 chicks in it until the police stopped me...

Daddy passed in August of '56 and so the Merc moved on. She called me, fully restored in 2017.

Son reports that he can't get the gas tank cleaned of mushy stuff in the tank the overloaded the fuel pump. I think the tank was replaced during the rebuild. What is happening? Is, whatever the interior liner is, deteriorating? Fuel gauge is completely eaten out.

Solution: buy new repro tank? Fuel line replaced.

Sounds like the tank had sealer put in it one time and it's now coming loose. If you can get a new tank, put it in rather than try to save the old one. I'm no Merc expert so I don't know if it has a different tank than a Ford.

Seven chicks? Memories are made of this!

Repro tanks require modern fuel gauge and sender. Your original fuel tank likely was sealed before ethanol fuel came in, and must be fully cleaned out and resealed with fuel resistant stuff. Not certain if your tank is the same as a Ford tank, nor if the gauge is also the same, that info must be verified before a decision can be made.

Call "Tanks"( which s owned by Yogi's) and ask about an adapter for the original sending unit and if the Merc. tank is the same as the Ford tank.
