Gas Shut Off Valve

I just received a new gas valve from Snyders to replace a leaking one, and the positions are opposite. The new valve is off with the lever horizontal. The old valve was opposite that. What is correct? Thanks!

Every quarter-turn valve I've ever used (not just on my Model A) works such that the handle is parallel with the flow; on my Model A that would equate to vertical for "on"/horizontal for "off" (with "flow" equating to coming out of the tank) - however, I have no other Model As to compare to (but since its operation is consistent with what I'm used to, it seems right to me)

Same as Willie, when the handle is down, at right angle to the fuel line, the gas is on. It does not make sense to me either. We have 2 old diesel locomotives, both ALCO'S the air **** handles are opposite for the flow of air. Guess that keeps us all on our toes.

springerpete,
