Gas Mileage?

My 29 Roadster can make 22-24 mpg. It has a Brumfield head and a 3:54. The 400A made 20 on the trip to French Lick (1700 miles there and back). It has a Police head and a 3:54.

Another thing is the carb jets. If the compensator is too big, they will drink gas.

I just drove the Tudor to Vicksburg and back. 1300 miles. There were a lot of hills. I ran 50-55. Snyder 5.5 head, stock Zenith,F150 4 speed overdrive.
Average mileage was 15-16. I thought it would be more. I did have to downshift to third a lot for the hills. The good thing was no breakdowns.

The last thing on my mind when I take my Sport Coupe out for a short ride or a long tour is how many miles per gallon am I going to get. Sure it may tell you something about the efficiency of the way you car is running, but really isn't the safety of the ride and your enjoyment of driving your eighty year old beauty what is really important?

I agree Frank. The enjoyment of driving ,the way the car handled curves and hills and the smile it put on peoples faces that we met was what counted.

the only A I know of getting 24mpg was a roadster pickup using real gas on highway I-5, which is flat, driving down wind. Most A's used to get 20 in good running condition, but with ethanol in there they get around 18 now on the highway, 16 in town, as low as 14 on the heavy cars.
I agree that MPG is not the reason we drive our Model As.
I am the one that got 24 MPG on a road trip last year. I had a Tillison carb on my touring B engine in my 29 RPU. I did drive along the Malibu / Ventura coast at about 40-45 MPH. I love the scenery.
Did the same trip this year to the Wings and Wheels. Same car, same speed, etc. I did make a small change. I ran a B manifold and a B carb. This year I got 21 MPG.
I don't drive fast and I try to drive a constant speed whenever I can. Kinda a game to see what mileage I can get.
I have no idea what it is around town because I don't fill it up. I only add 3-4 gallons at a time when it needs it.
I live in El Segundo CA and the trip was from home to Solvang, 150 miles away. 75 miles of the trip was on freeway still going 45 MPH.

Thanks alot everyone for all of the input...
I have a few cars that I drive and have never checked the mileage.. just filler-up when she needs it..
My plan is to try to replace my "modern" daily driver with a mostly stock Model-A... So strictly for monetary reasons... I need it to not be too bad on gas if I do so for a few months per year...

Zach, If you don't mind me asking, how many miles is your commute to work going to be? What type of roads, city driving and county highways? Summer and winter? Etc.

Al

Al,

Likely by the time this project is done I will be moved into a new house that I just bought.
It will then be about a 15 mile commute on normal 2 way roads, max speed about 45-50mph without alot of stopping. I would likely not use the model-A if its snowing or very cold out.

I'm driving a 31 coupe. Mostly stock w/ a Snyder head, 3.54 rear gear and a Tilison carb. A recent trip over 6 states, GA, AL, TN, KY, IN and MI gave us an average of 19.4 mpg, 2,957 miles. Some mountains and rolling hills, so it wasn't a flat run. This was driving combined city and mostly highway. Cruising speed avg. 45mph. The engine has about 15K and has always given great service. I run whatever gas is available when needed, nothing special all probably with 1% Ethanol. I hope this helps. FYI the trunk was full of luggage.
