gas issues

Can't keep my 40 running. Noticed is was hard to start without chocking the devil out of it. Thought is was cause of the cold weather (for AZ anyway). Got it started took it out for a spin and it quit. Only way to get it running was to shoot starter fluid down the carb. Go about 50 yards and quit. Took forever to get it home. Before I took it out I took off gas line from carb and hit the starter. Gas was pumping out in spurts. Thought it was ok. Any ideas. Carb was recently overhauled so it shouldn't be the problem but who knows. Any help or ideas will be appreciated.

Several posibilities, bad flex line sucking air, tank has rusty junk in it, low fuel pump pressure, gas cap not vented. blow back from the flex line toward the tank and see if that clears it, remove gas cap and try it, replace the flex line. also how old is the gas. also see if you have good spark, could be the condenser. check the fuel system first.

Not much to go on,are you getting spark at the plugs.FH dont need a lot of pumping to start.1 pump and let off on the pedal till it catches then give it gas. You could be flooding it. Also could be an empty bowl bad PV or gasket for it.?? ken ct.

I will start on it and see if I can narrow it down. The gas is new and high octane. But, I had drained the old and then pumped through new. Might have dirt though. I will check the spark first and then start. Is it easy to replace the plunger if needed or is there a trick to it? However there was no problem starting it but it would not keep running after the starting fluid ran out which makes me think a fuel issue. Thanks for the suggestions.
