Gas gauge inner nut

While removing the gas gauge from the mail truck, (cleaning the molasses from in tank) I noticed the inner nut was different. It has only 6 small reliefs for the removal tool.

It is definitly nickel plated, as compared to the chrome of the gauge. It is a 31 gauge assembly as it has the tap on the bottom. Since it was kept on the road via any part available to the postal garages the inner nut may not be original to the truck. Signs of this being unknown rear fenders, standard car runningboards and an eyebrow fender on the drivers side. Most all small parts are correct for the 31 chassis, being unrestored, there were no repro parts on it when I aquired it a little over year ago.

The truck being a York hoover body making it an early '31 (in reference to order # mv-1206 in June of 31 the first of two orders for the 31 chassis) all mail trucks of 31 were supplied with the indented firewall. If it (inner nut) is original to the truck, is this an item from 32 or is it something else?

Since it seems Ford was phasing out nickle plating I think it may be earlier.

Has any one seen this nut? Any ideas of year?

Emailed Pluck and he has is not familiar with it. He is curious, as am I.

The device is a vise!
Neat looking inner nut, can't say I have ever seen one like it.
I think you'll have fun making a tool to take it apart, though.

Maybe they got it from Dodge Brothers ! :D:rolleyes:

( Thinking about DB first logo, using a six-pointed star )

Hopefully you can find a bolt with a head that fits that inner nut, and use a double-nut or vise-grips to fashion a removal tool.

Not being familiar with the Model T's but didnt the 26-27 or the 27 "T"s move the gas tank to the upper cowl section during this time?

Maybe it is a "T" item for the "T" gauge, if there was one, for that time period?

Pluck

I too was thinking something 'T', i'll post pics on that side as well. I'm going to look at my scrap metal pile and see if I can find some rectangular bar stock, whatever it is I'd rather not bugger it up. I sort of like the looks of this one better than the regular nut.......
