Gap between cowl and base wood

Hi all,

I have the body off frame for my 68b for painting. The cowl is mounted on the two 'base'(?) wood pieces and there is a gap of about 5/16" at the rear base (ie, below the door hinges). This is covered by the door sill, but I'm wondering if it would be a good time to fill or seal the gap? If so, any suggestions?

are you making new wood or just want to fill it with something?

if just filling it, to get a better seal maybe cut a pc of thin Sheetmetal and nail or countersink screws to hold it to the existing board. maybe have it slip under the mount hole and put the bolt through it. i say nail because the heads are flat.

lots of holes in the wood floors that can let in fumes. the mats, felts and padding cover most of those. ive never had one yet that was sealed up perfectly but then i am not allowed to own anything real nice.

I typically use foam caulking backer for things like this. And, as old ugly suggests, aluminum flashing to protect the caulking backer from the elements.

Don’t forget to fill in the gaps on the side panels of your cowl while you’re at it. Blocks noise, heat and exhaust smell.

You can use spray foam but that can get messy, and is pretty much irreversible.
