I was looking for some primer in my paint locker, when I ran across some plumbers putty or sealant. It used on Hot water/steam pipes to keep them from leaking. Comes in a small can with a little brush attached to the top. Back when I was building engiines I used this on the head studs to prevent those pesty little drips that sadens your day. The stuff I have is called "The best paste"

that site shows several products, see Universal blue is mentioned, is that the stuff or is it Hylomar M or Aerograde PL 32 as both refer to Rolls-Royce, am guessing its the Universal Blue but just want to be sure

Any good high pressure pipe thread lube/sealer should work. We used "John Crane Plastic Lead seal" for all the high pressure and liquid lines when plumbing propane storage yards. I used some on the head bolts on my 59 ab when I put it together. No leaks and the bolts should come out without breaking fifty years from now.

If that stuff had been around in the '60's, British motorcycles wouldn't have the reputation they do for being leakers! Hylomar is universally used on the cases now and turns them into amazingly tight units.

But you still need lights at night !!!!..... MARK

Boy, what a great thread, learn sumpin every day. Never heard of some of this stuff, looks great.

I use some stuff called Indian Head, I'll have to look at the can to see who it's made by.

Hylomar was developed by Rolls Royce for its engines. It was probably in the Dart engine time frame when they were having problems keeping synthetic turbine oils in there turbine enginecases. I used to use it but went to 3-bond 1211 a long time ago since it seals better/longer on magnesium cases. The later Loctite 515 anaerobic sealants also work better than the Hylomar when dealing with turbine oil.
