fumes in wife's garage

. . . Have pulled it outside onto driveway to work on but Property Owners Association gets on me. ...

Ripper, please clarify for me- is the ***- sociation complaining about the smoke, or about you working on the driveway which may be 'public'?

Another thought is a exhaust fan installed in the ceiling of the garage. I bought a big one that is used in attics or roofs to suck out all the heat. Just cut a hole in the ceiling and stuck it in there. It shoots all the smells and fumes up to the vent in my garage attic.

Seriously? You kidding?? Man, I wouldn't practice that for long that's not what your starter was designed for.

Fix the problem or buy a Baker Electric car:o

Its really not so bad. We've used the starter to move the model A's many times over the years with no harm to the starter. The best gear to use is third gear. High gear is easier on the starter because it turns slower but goes faster. I've seen six volt starters used to power winches on wreckers.

I've had Model As with loose engines, but they didn't burn oil. You might have a broken ring. Whatever the problem is, I'd disassemble it, clean everything up, remove any cylinder ridge. hone the cylinders, install new rings, plastiguage the bearings, and put it back together. I think you'll be good to go.
Way too much money is spent on rebuilding engines that really just need some serious TLC.

I agree with Glenn. First I'd change the oil and be sure the gas is fresh and then put a few hundred miles on it. If it still smokes bad, a set of rings or rings and pistons just might fix it without too much expense.:)
