anyone ever heard of an older accessory that clamps on the a bumper and attaches to the trailer tounge. i got it at a sale today

If it puts any pulling pressure on the bumper clamps I wouldn't use it. You want any trailer to be pulled from a hitch being tied to the bumper arms.

Any pictures?

I've seen Model T front axles with the ends cut off and fastened to the back bumper through the spring perch holes with a hole drilled in the middle. Don't know how safe it may have been but the old guys pulled cotton wagons this way.

Like this Acme one?

If the illustration is accurate NOT for model A. Probably work on 36's and up into the 50's. I remember them from years ago. Won't handle any weight like a frame hitch would, IMO.

This is the one I have on my roadster. The oldtimer I got it from called it a "Draw Bar" and claimed it was an original (It sure has enough pits to be).
It looks like it may have received a flat tongue or some such which was held in place with a clevis pin. I think the modern ball was a later addition.
It looks simple to reproduce using one of the currently available spare tire guards, a length of bar stock, and a piece of channel or angle iron.
I dunno but it pulls my little utility trailer just fine.
