It is issues like this that makes it necessary for "special. home made tools."
Take your tool of choice to the bench grinder and make a special tool for that job.

Thanks, looks like a set of six points may be on the never ending shopping list. Meanwhile, I need to gather up the motivation to start removing 42 head studs.

I have a very old special tool for this job, with tapered six point socket heads. If you have access to a lathe it would be a simple matter to skim any socket down to a similar shape. if you could set the socket up on a drill press you could get the same effect by careful use of an angle grinder.

Use your ingenuity.

Mart.

You need to make "special tools' my friend! I have a socket that I put on my lathe and used a tool-post grinder to grind the OD down (especially near the bottom) - it is a 6 point socket and it allows me to get down onto these pesky Devils! :)

Well, there are several options--
Original tools designed specifically for the job are occasionally on EBAY. Mine are "Herbrand".

12 point sockets from high quality sources have thinner walls than 6 point and work just fine.

Do as others have suggested and reduce the OD in the offending area.
