Fueling AKA putting in gas !

Any body else having problems putting gas in old Ford pickups? A friend has a 40 PU and really has to put the gas in slow to keep it from spitting back. He has a BD tank. My tank was made by "Tanks". Would a small neck insert help? After the tank is 3/4 full if it sets a little off level the gas runs out the filler.

I'm having the same problem, but I have Chevy tank, came that way. Will change it later .BUT, I think it's too many sharp bends on the filler pipe.

I have the same issue with mine. I am thinking there is a sedan filler neck installed. The filler neck dips below the tank inlet and the cap end extends beyond the fender by about 1 1/5" There are two filler neck numbers listed for the cars vs pickups in a couple of catalogs.

There is no baffle in neck to prevent air to escape out so it will back up neck.Old style gas pumps had big nozzle that helped a little. But baffle goes down in the tank a ways.New tank mfg don't do this it cost more money I guess

I know your asking about pu's but thought I would mention that my original '35 fordor sedan does the same thing when I try to gas up. Even if the tank is almost empty, the nozzle will click off a couple times even though I start pumping gas very slowly. This seems to happen more often in warmer temperatures. It seems like I can never lock the nozzle on even at the lowest setting. Then if I completely fill the tank, some gas will come out at the cap when I start driving again, especially on turns.

Think about how the gas was pumped in to the cars &trucks Back when they were built.
Quite slow some times even gravity fed.
Now it is as fast as the fast pace world we live in.

Slow down at the high price of gas it will make you feel you are getting more for your $$$$$$ LOL LOL

WOW looks like I'm not alone about this. I don't mind pumping slow, but I don't like gas running out on the drive way after the tank is filled. I have an extra BD filler neck so I think I'll check to see if PUs and cars are the same (thanks 41Ford1) and then do some cutting (away from the tank) and wielding to see if I can cure the problem. I'll let you know what happens.

39 Ford Coupe - same problem! I just have to pump the gas super slow - also - I listen to the sound of the gas flow for early warning if it is about to barf gas back at me and the fender!

I may be wrong, but I think I saw some where that a 1/2" tubing in the filler neck that goes into the tank to relieve air from the top of the tank will solve the problem. The air exits at the top of the neck just below the cap .

Yes I use a piece of plastic tubing stuck into filler neck I to tank and turned up,works most of the time.

Can't tell you yet if that works, but I've plumbed my tank and neck the same way in the hopes of preventing the problem.

Same problem with my roadster. If I'm really careful I can fill up without spilling any but by the time I get home there's always some gas on the fender!

I might add to this that if you have a hydrostatic fuel guage & you put gas in too quickly it will put some gas into the guage & you will have to redo the red liquid all over again. Ask me how I know.
Gary.

Any body tried installing a later model baffle with a one way flap? I noticed my 94 F150 has this setup. Also the filler neck I got from BD has a small metal tube that runs parallel to the filler neck. I guess that's for some kind of venting.
