Fuel Tank Surgery

That related post shows the amazing transformation of a rusted tank. My God he did a great job on that!!!:)

I had tank about 35 years ago that had a bunch of pin hole along the seam where sand and salt had set for years. I remover the tank and filled it up with water and let it set about a day, drained the water and brased along the whole seam. Walt

Years ago before they made repro gas tanks I repaired my 40 gas tank by filling it with water and then cutting the top of with a grinding cut-off wheel. I found that the terne plate metal was difficult to gas weld or braze so I sealed the entire tank with fiber glass cloth and resin. It worked fine for the next 30 years.

Can you post a picture of the mounting of the sending unit?
Here's the screw pattern on my '53 tank. The top of the picture is toward the front of the tank.

Here also was my biggest clue that there was a problem. This filter was new five months ago! 317 miles ago! 28 engine hours ago! Ya think there may be a problem with the tank? Maybe?

Let's not jump to conclusions / Maybe just maybe some one used the filter remover all signs of it being used / Removed all smell of Gas ( there was a thread on here on how to do that) < BILLY Don't you open that can of worms again> then the person that used that filter went and bought a srink rap Machine to Make the filter look like it was unused so he could get his $$$$ Back & you unknowingly bought it. WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL it could have happen that way!!! LOL LOL
Ok now with the new tank Does any one have a picture of how they mount there sending units

It is indeed possible to have old tank coatings safely removed. For those of us in Ohio, "American Metal Cleaning" in Cincinnati does it with a hot chemical bath. It cost me about $140 for a gas tank from a WWII Willys jeep.

For a guy to weld or braze on a gas tank at home... first make sure that your will and other legal papers are current. No need to both kill yourself AND leave a messy estate!

I know this site is all about "stock", but I would consider putting a plastic tank in the car. With gasohol and lots of humidity in FL, and a vented tank, I think any kind of metal is going to have problems.

I love that idea, but as far as I can determine, no one makes a plastic tank that's a clone of the original. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a plastic tank that's "close" and then have to butcher it to make it fit.

I cut my 36 on the seam after filling with water ,after sand blasting and sealing with a brush, mig welded back up then poured some more sealer in and turned tank around and around till the seam on the inside was coated.Several years now and no problems.there are baffles in the tank so don't try putting nut in and turning, won't work,,,,

With the "RenU" system they open the tank sand blast the interior and close the opening then seal both the inside and outside. Cost was about 300 for a 34 tank. The outer sealer can be lightly sanded and then painted unless you want to leave it a matt black finish. Lifetime nationwide warranty.
