fuel soaked exhaust pipe on start up

Had this issue yesterday with my dads a. The carb float was not making contact with the needle. The bowl would fill up and than puke out excess gas. We have two extra carbs and swapped out the float with one that was shaped better. Problem eliminated.

I'm not alone :)
I have had the carb out and apart recently. Cleaned it all out and put back together. Will have to take a look again.

Tcap,
Could it just be some old cooked on oil or something that won't just wipe off. Maybe if you run it longer maybe it will burn off. Lay under the car while it's smokin' to find the origin of the smoke. Does your car run with GUSTO? If not, you may have a partially plugged exhaust, causing the pipe to get hotter than normal & puff off some smoke. Bill W.

I unbolted the exhaust pipe from the manifold and took a look. Don't see anything in there. Going to run the shop vac and blow it out to make sure. After that I'll clean up the spot that keeps smoking and see what she does.

Thanks for posting your results with each step. I read these every day trying to learn as much as I can.

OK it's been a long time but I wanted to get back to everyone on this issue. 2013 was a busy year so I didn't get around to this for a while. Ended up replacing carb with new Zenith. Car stared up great, idled great. Smoke came off exhaust pipe again, let it smoke until it stopped (must have been oil or grease, even though I cleaned it over and over again...). Took her for a ride around the block and she ran great. Just wanted to thank everyone for their input and help, it's great to be a part of the barn!

I am assuming you put the new Zenith 13922 carb on. If so you will love the way it performs. As a plus no leaks and messing with the gav.

Joe, no I ended up getting a new zenith copy of the original from Snyders. I did look at the 13922 but wanted it to look original.
