I’ve tried reviewing many of the forum entries on this subject and decided to just describe my situation. I’m afraid I don’t know some things since I don’t know what was done by previous owners.
About 2 years ago, I decided to try and fix the problem I had with running out of fuel when the gauge showed nearly 1/2 full.
I could tell the fuel tank had been replaced because it looked practically new. I assumed the dash gauge is original. I didn’t know if it had a new sending unit so I pulled it and it looked quite old so I replaced it with one I got from Concours Parts and Accessories. After installing the new part I still had the issue. I finally gave up and just tried to remember how much gas I should have.
Now I want to try and fix it. I found instructions on how to test the gauge with an ohm meter. Based on the readings I’m guessing the new sending unit is not the right one based on my reviews of the Forum.
Here’s my test:
Ohm meter set to 200
Positive lead attached to V[ohm]mA
Negative lead attached to Common
Positive lead attached to center terminal on sending unit
Negative lead attached to mounting plate on sending unit
Ohm meter readings:
1 At Empty
160 at approximately 1/2
43 at full
I can’t make any sense of this. Any ideas? Would a different sending unit (if even available) correct the problem? I thought parts from Concourse would be the correct part for the car you selected (1956 Thunderbird).
PS. I currently have 2 1/2” of gas in the tank. Any idea what the gauge should read?
Thanks
