Fuel sender pics & questions please

Guys, I just bought a fuel tank off of Ebay which looks really nice ans solid. However the sending unit needs work. Yes, repros are available but I want this unit to perform as new. It's super clean inside and the arm is free. Also I do get ohms variation so to me its work fixing for sure. The problem is that the top screw is a mangled mess. Anyone know if parts for these are available or anyone know who has the ability to fully restore this unit? Its a facinating piece inside and I would like to restore it myself if feasable. Thanks in advance.

A related question, the tank is in good shape. First step would be to have it boiled out? Any other things to watch for?

As I understand it, the repros use a different technology, thus you have to replace the gauge as well. A couple of years ago there was along thread on this subject.
I got one off eBay and have good luck with it.

Your tank come from under the seat? look for rust outs and junk in it. Look to see if it has baffolds that will trap junk. Inspect the snout weld/screw-in to be sure it is not ruptured.

Clem, thanks for the input. The inside of the tank looks spotless, I'm amazed. Know if these we originally painted?

If the inside of the tank "looks spotless", I would just run it as it is. You could take the sender unit to someone who works on electronics to see what they can do with it.

Actually, the repro senders use a different technology than the originals, but will work with original gauges. Some folks disagree with me (often vociferously), but every conversion I've done works well.

If you can get the stock sender working, however, that's the cleanest setup going. Not sure about your top screw issue - can you replace it with a fabricated piece - it needs to be insulated from grounding is all and make contact with the innards appropriately.

I sent it off to John's Instruments in Ohio yesterday. Sounded very nice on the phone and really knew his stuff. Plus I called a Packard friend of mine who told me John did a great job on his '54 Packard. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks again
