Look up, VDO Reed Switch Fuel Sender - 150mm - 240-33 Ohm, #226-615.
My 1941 Ford conv. coupe upgraded to 12v fuel sender never ready worked right. Some days better than others. I realized that the sender in my boat would work in the Flathead. Comes pre wired with gasket. Will it work on 6v with a resistor, I don't know. My tank is 6.5: deep > relates to the 150mm.
240-33 ohm for the 12 volt gauge. Check it on the internet. See ya

Well I found out the hard way not to buy off an off brand. The proper Reed Sending unit is made by Rochester Gauge. One I received in the first post "VDO Reed Switch Fuel Sender - 150mm - 240-33 Ohm, #226-615" from a Ebay seller is a bad knock off. Sorry for posting information before I had a chance to fully try it out.

The OEM gauges work on variable current flow so I doubt you will ever find a rheostat type sender that will ever meet the range that might work it accurately. It would be a lot easier to just modify the gauge cluster for a 12-volt rheostat type indicator and match it to a rheostat type sender that will fit in the tank.

I installed a 10-73 ohm sender from Yogi's street rod parts in my '41 Ford 20 yrs ago. Connected to my stock gauge with a Ron Francis 12-6V electronic reducer.Works like a charm. E is EMPTY, F is slighty over Full with 17 gal.
