Fuel Sediment bowl

I have a 1930 4door with the cast iron sediment bowl. What is the spring for on the drain valve? My car did not have one but I have seen some pictures of cars with and some without. A spring came with the filter/washer rebuild kit. It seems the drain valve needs to be screwed all the way in to not leak but if I install the spring that wont be possible.

According to the Judging Standards some used the spring and some didn't.

Spring just used to insure that the drain valve didn't open on it's own

The length of the threaded portion of the unscrew part determines whether or not a spring can be fitted. Yours apparently not.
