Fuel Pump

The original fuel pump on my 1940 85hp outlet valve was sticking after sitting for a while.I decided to rebuild it. The valves in it are not like what rebuild kits show. The valves are like fiber washers with little springs holding them in place. This pump has the staggerd inlet/outlet ports,has no glass bowl,and has the drain petcock. the number on the mounting flange is 1537383. The green bible does not.. show this kind. Could the kind that comes in the rebuild kit replace the fiber ones.

36-40 uses the fiber disc and small spring. About the only place to find replacement disc and springs is in NOS rebuild kits, but they do not go bad so don't loose them.

The pumps that I have been into, I have never changed the fiber valve because they seem to be okay. Perhaps that is not the correct thing to do?
I use the ethanol resistant diaphragm and change the spring and the pumps work great.
 
Thanks Seth Swoboda, I think that the pump I have is Made by AC Delco. I was wondering if Ford used pumps made by AC in 1940 late builds
 
The gasket is the hardest part to find for the pump you have….and remembering which way the washers go. Turn the fiber washers over (now you have new sealing surfaces), put the springs back and install an ethanol proof diaphragm and you will have a freshly rebuilt pump.
 
Be sure to inspect the brass seats that the fiber washers seal against. My ‘32 has the fiber washers and springs, and I’ve sometimes seen some whitish or grey film on the seats. I think I’ve touched them up with some rolled up 800 sandpaper to brighten them up a bit. But don’t be too aggressive. As said previously, I usually flip over the fiber washers after cleaning them with carb cleaner.

i removed the fiber washers and cleaned them.I am going to order a new diaphragm just in case
