fuel pump pushrod?

I`m reassembling a 46-48 engine that was installed in a 40. The fuel pump rod was missing so I ordered one from macs. My question is does the washer/cup on the rod go towards the top or bottom?

The umbrella or funnel shaped part goes down towards the cam. Someone had a recent post where these foreign made rods were made incorrectly and would not work the fuel pump. Maybe find that post and read about where they bought theirs so you can make sure you don't have the same problem.
There was also a post on that same thread from a guy (barnfind08?) who is selling NOS original at a good price. You also need to know which length rod to order for your setup.

I conversed with that guy John and he said it came from Mac's. Its been so long since ive had my pump or stand off im not sure which way it goes up or down.He can remove the stand and figure out which way it goes,it'll only reach the level of the pump cup in 1 position so it will be obvious which way it goes. He needs the 8 7/8 rod for a cast iron intake manifold.I would get one from Vendor you mentioned. Not Macs, supposedly the umbrella was crimped in the wrong place. How many got through like that?????????? ken ct LOL

Yea ken, the umbriller goes down, BUT, make sure the fat pipe baffel goes in after the push rod. Alot of those baffels have been left out and the breather system won't work right on the 48 and older engines. Walt

The push rods are made of three parts; the middle tube, with short and long end caps. The long cap goes into the block, and the short cap is the pump end. It's hard to see on the early rod, but more visable on the late rod shown below.

Ken and Walt are both correct with info in their posts. It does amaze me how a large supplier of Ford parts sends a very simple part, consisting of two or three pieces, off to a foreign manufacturer and says "make me x number of parts exactly like this sample" and they all come back made wrong and the saddest part of this story is that a customer has to find this mistake when he assembles his engine maybe six months after he received this incorrect part. I have to wonder how many others also have one of these incorrectly made parts waiting to go in their newly rebuilt engine? Probably just another case of eliminating the cost of having QC at just about every level of manufacturing and sales. :( I think I may need to go out in the garage an throw some wrenches around and kick the dog a few times until I feel better again :D ;)

Would you post a picture kicking the dog?? That would really rile things up!! Oh yeah, take your shoes off first.

Cecil, you always make me smile. Do you think I should put a dog kicking post on Henry's latest "Flathead's and Pets" thread? LOL :D. That would surely get his thread and me deleted!! Not gonna happen there buddy :D
