fuel problem

I am having an ongoing fuel problem....my old pump was leaking fuel from the weep holes so I removed it to send it out for a rebuild. In the mean while I had another pump that I picked up some time back and installed it....ran well for a mile or so then the car would bog down and the engine would die unless I turned on my electric pump which I generally use for only starting the car after it has set for a while...anyway,the electric fuel pump starts pumping and the car comes back to life and runs great as long as I leave my electric pump going....if I shut the electric pump off then in another mile or so,I have to turn the electric pump back on again..
Here is what I have done....changed fuel filter...changed flex hose at fuel pump to main fuel line....the gas tank is new and so are the lines so there is no crud in the fuel lines or filter for that matter....

Can an accelerator pump in the carb cause this condition ?
The carb was rebuilt approx 2 years ago and I use the car quite a bit and it was running great, until now...... Or do you think I just got two bad fuel pumps in a row ?
Thanks for all opinions....John

if the engine keeps running on the electric pump there is nothing wrong with the fuel system except the old pump you installed is no good, if you need to drive the car run on the electric pump till you get the rebuilt one back and installed, electric pumps some times need a fuel regulator so they wont flood the carb

The old pump you took off most likely had a hole or crack in the diaphram,ok. Now the second pump could have been bad to start with before you put it on. Like ford3 said run on the elect. for now and replace with the rebuilt when it comes back. ken ct.

I've found in the past on some of my old ford is the location and placement of the added elec. Fuel is important with regards to the fuel tank. But most important is some not all elec. Fuel pumps require a by-pass fuel line system to permit the mech. Pump to operate . Some elec. Fuel pumps don't permit the fuel to pass thur causing the lack of fuel. Carter elec. Fuel pumps are one type that wont permit fuel to run thur without it power up. Theres some nice threads here one the barn. For more information. Check it you will be happy.

Traded e-mails with another member recently and he bought his mechanical fuel pump form O'Reilly's and they have a warrantee for a year...if it fails you just take it off and return it for new one. Back when I first got my car I rebuilt one then bought two more then went to a carter elec (preset at 2-4 lbs so no regulator required) and that was 2 ½ years ago without any further issues. Just a thought and good luck...get her back on the road summer is finally here!
