fuel level gauge 6 volt

I'm replacing the old gas gauge in my 1935 Ford with a newer type gauge, but I'm finding it difficult to find one in 6 volt. Any ideas? Thanks, Gary C

In 36 the gauge went electric and should fit 35 like a glove. Now the gas tank sending unit is a different story. I am not sure if the 36 tank will fit a 35, but both have the screwed in filler neck. The 36 has the fuel line pick up on the front of the tank unlike the 35 (on top). The 35 tank could be modified with an adapter so the electric sender fits, you may want a shop to open the hole and solder in the adapter. Then you can use a 36 sending unit.

Gary-

No problem installing a '36 tank in a '35. That is what I have in my '35. However, the neck curvature is different. You must use a '35 neck for a '35. As far as fitting a '36-'55 electric sender in a '35 tank, it may be "possible" but not worth the effort. You will need to remove the reinforcement around the current sender hole and resort to sheetmetal screws to hold the replacing sender in. This is asking for leaks. This is no adapter for adding an electric sender to a '35 tank that I know of.

Your BIG problem will be getting the neck off. Use lots of penetrating oil over a few days and use a spanner wrench (not a pipe wrench), to get it off. This may take several tries. If all fails cut the neck and rejoin with a rubber connector.

Hope this helps.

I think if you go with all '36 components, you should be fine. If you're looking for aftermarket, I don't know of any 6V aftermarket sending units/gauges.

Gary C-

I am using a 6 volt system. If you are thinking about a 12 volt sender, 1956 Ford will work. Same bolt pattern and arm shape.

Hope this helps.

I do not know much about the passenger cars, so this may not be correct. The filler tube on the 35 and 36 pickup are different because of the electric gas gauge in the 36 as opposed to the hydrostatic one in the 35. It seems like they made an adaptor plate to use the later float setup on the earlier tank...different bolt patterns.
