My 35 coupe has 40 hyd brake system, and is missing the caps. I bought new aftermarket. Spent two hours trying to make one fit. They are the press in style. Any thoughts? Anyone got a couple of original? Need not be perfect, but usable.

1940 drums used screw type dust caps. Perhaps you simply have incorrect caps?

No help here but, I wish they had never gone away from the screw-in caps. They seem better in every way to me. I'm guessing it was a cost saving move.

My 47 merc with a disc conversion, ended up with the caps not fitting because the deepest caps I could get, were not deep enough.I used two sockets,a larger one on the dome of the cap,and a smaller one the inside, that I squeezed in a vise, and pushed it into the larger one, which elongated the cap on the dome.

The 1940 style (hub flange inside the drum) front drum ,does come in two styles either screw on dust cap (as original to 1940) or press in (may be a later Ford service replacement). I have used a PVC plastic pipe coupling the size will fit over the press on cap to the flange and allow you to hammer on the cap without damage.

I was missing a cap on one side of my 1939 pickup. I bought a repo and it did not fit. The next time I went to a swap meet I bought an original thinking that the repo gremlin had struck again. The original did not fit either. On close examination I saw that the end of the hub was slightly misshaped. I took a brass rod and pushed the flat spot out and the cup was able to be screwed on.
