Front suspension bounces

Just picked up a 63 Galaxy. New shocks, but when I apply the brakes the front acts like there are no shocks. It bounces. Are new coils in order? By bouncing, I mean it moves up and down with 5-6 inches of motion. Many thanks for advice.

Coil springs have no moving parts, so they can't wear out. But they sure do lose the ability to hold up a ton of old car. They are not difficult to replace, and the money is well spent for replacements.

Thanks. It odd that the front of the car is higher than normal , it's as if the springs are too tall by about 3"s. I will replace them.

It sounds as if it still needs shocks. Id check those as well to see if you have the correct ones for the car. Coil springs carry the load but shocks absorb irregularities in the road and they also control the rebound rate after hitting a bump. Moving 5 to 6 inches up and down freely sounds like they aren't working at all. Even if new but left to sit for a long time they can deteriorate.

I'll go along with possibly the wrong shocks, take one out and match up the part number. I had too long shocks in the rear of a '67 Chevy, really held the back up high.

They are a few months old.
Age doesn't matter at all if they aren't actually functioning properly, or the correct ones to match the size & weight of the car.
I agree with the other comments that the car could easily have the wrong springs and shocks.

With who knows how many owners in the last 50+ years, a previous owner could have done almost anything 'unusual' with the suspension parts.

32066 sounds correct, this is what I have on my '59. Is your front stabilizer hooked up? Just a thought. It may bounce if the links were broken or missing.

Rear shocks are installed
Stablizer link bushings are shot. Will replace next. Maybe the brakes need adjusting? Front grabbing before the rear??

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you and a couple big friends just push it down and let it come up, and do it again. That was our old test for shocks. Get the car bouncing and see how long it takes to stop. IIRC, it was one cycle, i.e. from pushed down, to up, to stop as it comes down. Not very scientific, but that's what we did.

Has any of the front suspension bushing been replaced? I have seen some problem when it was assembled with A arms hanging down and bolts tighten up that way. What that does is put the bushing in a bind when settled with weight on it, and will want to lift the front end. Just a thought.

A-arm bushings are original. Cracked, etc. When pushed, the car settles with one cycle, Flatrod. I will check to see if it has rear braked properly adjusted. Thanks for advice. I will replace the sway bar links

Replace with these which much better than the stock rubber which these days are offshore produced and poor quality. See section on how to measure. http://www.energysuspensionparts.com/universal-sway-bar-bushings.asp And
