Front hub seal ?

Hi guy's,,,

While looking at my A part's catalog, I noticed the front hub seal ( A-1190 )...I alway woundered why there wasn't some sort of seal for the front hub's..Mine must of been tossed long ago.

Where does this "seal" go, in the hub or on the spindle ?...I take it this part wasn't around way back...(reproduced)... I've had the car for 43 year's and I missed this part ?...

Thank's guy's,

Greg,

A-1190 is the INNER seal and is pressed on the spindle. A-1195 is the outer flat washer and offers pretty good protection, along with the wheel and hub cap, to keep dust out of the bearing. There is another aftermarket dust cap you can install on the outer end of the hub, but you need to cut back the flat washer A-1195 to use it. Since we don't drive too much on dirt roads anymore, the stock setup should do fine.

The A-1190 dust seal is one of the worst reproduced parts ever inflicted on the Model A hobby. They are made in India and every dimension is incorrect. One of the better suppliers sent his stock out for rework, but all the dimensions were not considered. They can very easily bind the front wheel bearing. Best to leave them off if you cannot locate some originals.

I ran into this problem several years ago and left them off both front wheels for over two years before I located some originals at a swap meet. It didn't seem to have any affect on the car running without them, and I put a lot of miles on my Model A each year.

I got some 1/4" felt sheet from McMaster-Carr and cut washers that are a close fit over the spindle and inside the (original) inner seal. I rubbed some wheel bearing grease into the outer surface, where the hub touches. I think I used their Firm Gray Felt.

It wouldn't keep out water if you submerged it, but it keeps out everything else.

I also got the aftermarket dust caps to which Tom W. refers, and turned down the bearing washers to clear them.
