Front bumper relocate or replace

Some may agree and some may disagree but my opinion is that on my 28 RPU the front bumper is way to far out there. I know of one RPU owner that shortened the front bumper braces 3" and it looks great. The problem is that those braces are spring steel and any kind of modifying/fabricating is way beyond my skills and my equipment. Does anybody know of a supplier that sells shorter braces? Or some type of bumper replacement that will bolt onto the the frame rails? If I can't come up with something suitable I will just run without the front bumper. I appreciate any ideas, I don't want to hear about why I should not do this, it just wastes time. Thanks!

think sawzall and carborundum blade............easy peasey.

HF has those saws for 21. the blade will cost at least 10.

Are you using a 28/29 bumper? There is not much further back you can go. You can go quite a bit further back with a 30/31 bumper.

Ron's comment should take care of cutting the brackets.

I have a 28 RPU so a couple questions; can the 30-31 be used on a 28? They're readily available and not much money so i would do a swap. If that is a no go I can certainly cut them as described (I'm always looking for an excuseto buy a new tool) can I drill them with a carbide bit?

yes you can swap bumpers- I actually have a pair of 28-29 rears on my roadster- just liked them better.

yes carbide bit. it will be worn out after a few holes.

If I was to move the bumper back 3 inches on mu 28 it would be in the tires. Those brackets are pretty hard and springy.I had a nice looking one with a bend, and I thought I might straighten it out.I have a big vise mounted on a huge concrete block.I clamped the bracket in,and took a swing at it with a 16 pound sledge. That sledge wound up 10 feet behind me.When it bounced off the bracket it was like somebody ripped it out of my hands in a split second. When I put it in the press I had to overbend it a huge amount before it would spring back to what I needed.

Interesting mine is about 7" out there so it's possible that somebody already shortened your? I'm not surprised about your experience with the sledge, I've done such things before. In fact I have a big 'ol scar on the top of my head to prove it, your lucky you didn't kill yourself LoL.

The pickup used the same frame, fenders, bumper mounting brackets as the car. Maybe someone used the AA brackets?

I'm wondering if this is an issue only with the trucks? the one I know about was an rpu like mine

I think it is time for a picture. I have had Model A's (all '30-'31) and this is the first time I have heard of this problem. Any chance you are building a street rod with smaller tires? Can you find some to compare yours with?

The 1928 to 30 AA front bumper brackets are longer than the 1928 to 30 A front fender brackets. First, I would make sure that you have the correct brackets.
