front brakes

The front brake actuating arms on my 31 roadster are at about 10 to 12 degrees forward when the brakes are ajusted properly, and I'm thinking about using shims or "pills" to bring them to 15 degrees forward . Would one shim be enough , or should I consider another route? Also I'm told the shim should go at the bottom of the pin and not the top? As always your opinions are greatly appreciated....Thanks,Scotty

Yes the pills go at the bottom of the pins. This means they would be put into the wedge. Add one pill to begin with and see where this puts the arm. If another is needed, then add it.

Actually, stop for just a second. Before you do anything, jack up the wheel and adjust the brakes where they are correct. Then have someone depress the brake pedal firmly to see where the lever is. If it is in the straight verticle position, or just slightly beyond, additional pills will not benefit you in anyway.

Also, it used to be that one pill per side was all that is considered acceptable. I do not know what changed but if you need more than one per side, you have other issues. I would measure your pin and see what the overall length is at present as it is supposed to be 7.250". Welding/Brazing on one end of the pin and re-shaping the metal to obtain the correct length is the best way IMHO. Using the pin to correct other defects by making it much longer is not the best way IMHO.

Sometimes there is already a pill in there, but they are hard to see when jammed tightly into the wedge.

The stock front brake operating pin was 7.1875 inches long. However, Snyders sells a front brake operating pin which is 7.28 inches long. I used them and they eliminated the need for shims (pills). I once attended a brake rebuilding seminar conducted by Les Andrews. He strongly recommended the use of the 7.28 inches long operating pin.

Dick,

Where did you get the stock length information?
