Front Brakes Draging

Hi. Took my 40 Ford out for a spring ride, when I put back in garage it would not roll ,jacked up rear and wheels turned free, jacked up front and the wheels could hardly turn ,both wheel. I thing the problem is with the master cylinder. If some one could help me with a solution I would like it. Thanks John

Dual master cylinder, or the stock single cylinder type? What is the history on your three soft hoses......new or older? All four stock-type Lockheed brakes, or something else? DD

not enough free play in the cylinder push rod to allow the piston to come back fully, adjust the likage. you do have a return spring on the brake pedal??

were the brakes good before you left for the ride?
could you feel them drag during your drive?

Just a wild guess here....flex line to the front wheel cylinders may be deteriorated and letting the fluid go into the cylinders but not out.Making them more or less a one-way valve.I've had the same problem in the past.

Probably front hose(s) or the wheel cylinders have become corroded. That happens often when the car sits for an extended period and you are using DOT 3 brake fluid.
I'd vote for the wheel cylinders being "gummed up".
I'd suggest you remove at least one front wheel to start with and see if that cylinder is moving in and out freely.
If the back wheel spun freely and the front ones did not, it is not the master cylinder nor the adjustment of the master push rod.

I agree!

Open a bleeder screw, if it frees both wheels it is most likely in master cyl or piping, if it frees just that wheel look to the hose, if it changes nothing look for gummed stuck wheel cyl

I'd agree with some of the comments:

The fact that the rears are free indicates the master cyl and pushrod adjustment are probably ok. The fact that both front wheels are tight would indicate that either both hoses have failed internally of the cylinders have both gummed up while standing.

Personally I'd lean towards the cylinders sticking as having both front hoses fail in the same way at the same time is unlikely.

Mart.
