Front brake shaft thread damage

I am aware that the removal of the front brake shaft can be done carefully to avoid damaging the threads on the little stud, but as with most 80 year old cars, mine has seen some rough hands in the past. The threads are there, but ugly. Would it be permissable to cut the threads down the next size with a die, or is that inviting problems down the road?

No I would use a thread chaser, available at Sears or Snap On
A die would cut threads to deep

Why not just find another one, they were common in the 1$ piles at Hershey.

try a new nut, if it tightens use it until you find a better one.

The full diameter of the stud locates it in the kingpin --reducing the diameter could result in alignment problems with the push rod.

If a new castellated nut hold fairly well on the stud after cleaning the threads well, the cotter key will probably do the rest. Maybe a little blue Locktite would give it the final finishing touch.
