Fron radius rod ball insert

I'm in the process of installing the new style cast iron front radius ball holder. .

*What's the secret to getting the rubber ball over the steel radius ball?

*With the new cast iron unit, which doesn't use the springs, the nuts are well above the cotter pin holes when tight. Should I just use lock washers instead?

*With the new cast iron style is it still necessary to use the felt on top?

Thanks,

I use a couple of thin sheet metal sleeves to spread the rubber ball enough to slide it over the radius ball. Others have reported using a couple of spoons. I find it necessary to replace the rubber ball every year or so as oil finds its way onto the rubber and will cause the rubber ball to deteriorate.

I read somewhere recently that a pair of teaspoons works well, not that I have ever fitted one of those balls and believe Bruce of MN is on the right track.

It was my understanding that the rubber ball cover was introduced on the 1932 and later Ford radius balls. An improvement to the steel on steel design of the Model a.
