Freeing stuck trunk lock mechanism

So my first problem: The trunk lock seems to unlock with the key OK. The lever on the underside of the trunk handle moves and feels like it is engaged, but the trunk will not open. I've tried pushing down and lifting up while moving the lever with no result.
The problem feels mechanical, not like the trunk gasket is "welded" to the body (trunk hasn't been open in 40 years ).
Is there any way to access the trunk locking mechanism other than removing the rear seat?
Assuming I have to go thru the rear seat, how do I unlock the trunk from inside the trunk?
Thanks
Tony

Tony...you have to remove the rear seat ..bench and back...crawl thru with a lite and have someone work the lever outside and see what isn't moving. I'll go downstairs and look at mine to see if the mech. is visible from the inside of the lid.....Mark

Yes you can see an arm going down to the release mech. there's a couple holes on each side of the arm that comes inside from the lever.Maybe you can soak it with penetrant thru the holes....Mark

Ours would not open last week , the bad news we had 4 crossplys and a 700r4 trans in the trunk. Only option was to remove the back seat and cut out the parcel shelf k supports to get enough space to remove the tyres and slither over the big old trans to open the trunk . Sorry this was in a 54 but I can see you facing a similar problem.
