In N.H. there is no sales tax,so for an antique you pay the same 50 cents per month for the registration to the state, and whatever your town clerk fee is.Usually $6-$12.You can pay $500.or $50,000 for an antique car,the fee is the same. We have an ordinance in town about the number of unregistered vehicles, and about 35 years ago some of us got letters about them.Nothing of mine is near a road,or visible, but I got in compliance anyway.I registered 12 or 15 antiques. My friend registered 22.Insurance is not required in N.H.so it just cost about $12.each to do.

In CA you need both plates in good condition. DMV has to approve them - that they don't conflict with a current plate. You pay a fee to assign them to your car $50 and then $40 a year since they treat them like vanity plates. There is no restriction on driving with them. The plates are yours when you sell the car. You can keep them (and pay the annual fee) or sell them outright (or to the new buyer if he wants them). A set is about $400 currently.
