Frank's $15.00 Deuce 3 Window

Hey all,

I thought you all would get a kick out of this, I was in a conversation with a old Friend of mine Frankie many years ago ( he has passed away now ) I was telling him about a really rough 32 3/W body I was trying to get, at that time the money was stupid,.....
Frank looks at me and says, "Did I ever tell you about my $15.00 Deuce ?"
( He went on ) I was in a junk yard looking for a 34 Pontiac steering box for my roadster project in 47 or 48. up near the gate was this 32 Ford 3 Window a guy just drove up in,... I see the guy go to the office and come out and get into another car and take off. as I go to leave I ask the guy that owns the yard about it. He says I just got it in, I want 20 bucks for it, Frank tells him the right front fender was knocked in and it needed a bumper " I'll give ya' $10.00. The yard owner walks into the back of the shop, brings out a new bumper in brown ford wrapping paper and says $15.00 and I throw in this new bumper,.......... Frank said O.K.
Frank was a expert body man,.. He drove the car as it was for a couple months. He took it to Traverse City, on the way back he could feel it was going to need King Pins, so he says when I get's back I knocked out the fender and sprayed it with paint left in the gun then put on the bumper and sold it for $35.00,... ( He looks me square in the eyes,.. With his one good eye and says) "Now your telling me, you are gonn'a buy a roach body for $3,500.? ( like I said this was many years ago) Well, Looks like I really cut a fat hog on my deal huh ?" He told me he had pictures of that car somewhere. When we were cleaning out his house on Randall & 8 Mi. he found these and gave them to me,... he said " the Dame covered up the bad fender with her wide butt, The other Dame was too skinny" then he laughed,.....

I just didn't want to see this old story fade away so I thought I would share it with all of you. hope you enjoyed.

Are you hanging the pictures on the wall in your shop?
Great story and amazing that the pictures were still around. Wish I had all of my fathers pictures from his child hood. I remember some of the cars but all the pictures are now gone.

It is hard to believe what you could buy cars for in the old days. My dad bought a 2dr 34 Ford sedan delux for $50 in 1938. I bought a 25 Model T coupe from the original owner for $40.00 in 1954, alos a 1960 Chevy 2dr ht in 1986 for $750.00.

Good story, but here's something to think about. In 1948 that same $15 would have the same buying power as $132.21 would have today. Also in 1948 that 32 Ford was 16 years old and Ford's then like Honda's today that are 16 years old were common.

So just think if you went to a junk yard today and a guy pulled up in a 16 year old Honda with a beat up fender and needing a bumper would you be jumping all over it for $132? Still at $15 then or $132 now a car still beats walking. I guess what I'm trying to say is that was just as common as it would be today to find deals like that. It's all relative.

I'm glad you guy's enjoyed the story,... Frank had a ton of stories!,... when Frank got older he gave me his shoe box full of pictures,... Frank used to restore "Antique cars" (Horseless carriages) in the 1940.

He started building a Hot Rod in the the late 40's after going to the first "Oakland Roadster show",... That Hot Rod won Best of Show & Best Engineered at the first Detroit Autorama in 1953.

Frank was like a "Dutch-Uncle" to me,... I still have a lot of stuff he gave me through the years,... One of the smartest, most talented people I had ever met,.... despite his lack of formal education past High School. He always thought there was at least 3 solutions to any problem,... ("Ya' just gotta' look at it from every angle" :)).

Frank has been gone for several years now,... I still really miss our conversations,..... Frank Mack,..... one of a kind !

This is Frank with his Aunt in Traverse City Mi. 1954

Here is Frank with his 1901 Locomobile he restored just before the war,.... he kept it until 1997. I'm not sure when the picture was taken, maybe early 50's.
(Although I can't remember his name, the older gentleman was a chief engineer for Locomobile in the day)

And here is Franks Nephew, With Franks 1902 Covert,... (restored before the Locomobile) all Franks Cars were restored to perfect running condition. Guy's like Frank were the cornerstone of our Hobby.

Wow.....Frank had a great roadster there. Any idea what happened to that car? Joe

Yep,... It now resides in the Peterson Museum in California,.. it's owner is Bruce Meyer.

Here's Frank with the top two trophy's, That he won at the first Detroit Autorama in 53',.. This picture was taken in 1991, Frank was in my Hot Rod Club, and His car was our clubs 40th. anniversary display at the 1991 Detroit Autorama.

And another cool picture,... "Yer' Ol' Dad!",.... Gray,... Just after Bruce took possession of Franks Hot Rod,.... This car is in it's original finish,.. and has never been restored.

Frank had some great cars - it would have been a real pleasure to know him I'll bet. My first car was a '31 Chev 2dr (for shame) that I paid $35 for. A year later I sold it for $25 and my Schwinn bicycle for $50 and bought my first flathead Ford, a 1934 4 door, for $75.

well, given that we are talking about a ford 3 window coupe, i think it's more appropriate to equate it to something more sporting, and maybe even american...

i'd be all over a 16 year old mustang for $132. or, if that isn't believable enough, even a 1994 crown vic in need of a bumper and some fender work is a steal at that price. but i don't think you'd find one. scrap is worth more than that now.

my theory is that anything good enough to pass inspection is worth 1500 bucks these days. inflation has caught us up.

the stories are awesome. i have always dug that roadster. very cool car.
