Found "things" in the flywheel housing...

Found this in the flywheel housing today when I pulled the motor. Not sure what it is as I have limited experience...but I'm certain it's not good. I'm assuming it's bearing. Rear main? I'll be pulling the pressure plate, clutch & flywheel this week.

Looks somewhat like a bushing, perhaps a pilot bushing although the original was a bearing and not a bushing. Keep digging.

Not sure about yours but just did this last week and we found numbers starter parts from past failures.

Its the end off your starter drive, Derek from a nice warm spring day in NZ 1077 earth quakes in 3 weeks, Yes thats correct 1077, Folks in CH-CH now taking sea sick pills, 12 Days to the swap meet.

Before you pull everything put the motor at TDC on number one cylinder and mark the pressure plate and flywheel so when you reassemble it all goes back as it was. If you had no undue vibration issues you wont change any for the worse if you get my drift. Just a thought but I expect you knew this anyway.

John in its STILL raining maybe I`ll buy a canoe dark wet evening England.

Derek you are correct from what I can tell. There is nothing else broke or missing and I did lose a starter drive last fall. Thank you!!!

I pulled mine about a week ago, I figured this was normal, finding loose parts, broken springs, screw bits and such. I figure I'll be going through every thing, every, thing.

Check all the safety wired bolts, especially the flywheel housing. If these are loose there is alot of undesirable movement that can put extra strain on the bendix. Also make sure the flywheel dowel retainer (Bratton's #11560) is there. Bob

Going home from Chicago I had just gotten off the expressway when the car started making a terrible clattering noise. I was concerned the housinf might brake so I called a friend with a trailer and got home. This is the collection I found in the flywheel housing.

Starter%20Bolts.jpg

The noisy bolt was trapped between the flywheel and the housing and I could not get it out even after I pulled the engine. Had to remove the flywheel to get it out. This is an unrestored car with less than 50K miles. All of these are from before I purchased the car.

Jim. No koalas here mate , they live on the small island off shore from NZ , besides they are too slow for me, only FAST guys live here, Neat pictures on lastest FAST mag. Tip ,If you shave enough of the flywheel the extra pieces won,t touch the sides & jam it, Course down under they end up at the top so no problem ?? Derek from a very wet day in NZ.

That's two starters worth of bendix bolts.

I'm too late for this as the engine is out. It shouldn't matter though should it in so long as I haven't touched the pressure plate, clutch or flywheel correct? Les Andrews book doesn't mention this. Glad you did.
