fordomatic transmission

I have a 1956 Ford Victoria with a ford-o-matic transmission. I need to know how many times it should shift when starting in Drive. Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks

When starting in drive it should shift two times, starts in 2nd and shifts to 3rd. If you tromp on it from a dead start, it will start off in 1st, then shift to 2nd and 3rd.

Or if you want to play Ricky Racer, put in low and nail it, shift to drive and immediately back into low. This will hold it in second until you shift to drive once again for third. Have fun...

Start in Drive, one shift. Second to third.
Start in Low ( 1 st gear), manually shift to Drive ( 2nd ), automatic shift in Drive to 3rd ( high) gear. Correct ?

I used to use YBlockheads method of shifting my 56. Got so good at it guys thought I put a stick in it.

With gear select lever in Drive, it starts out in 2nd gear, then shifts to 3rd gear. So it only shifts one time in drive normally. Of course, you can select Low gear, then pop the lever up in drive once it gets to about 25MPH, then it will shift from 2nd to 3rd as it normally does.

Actually, from a dead stop in drive, you can stand on it and it should drop (automatically-pun intended) into low gear. Then ease off the accelerator and it will probably bypass second gear and shift into high. Pretty cool ****** once you get all that monkey-motion linkage dialed in.
