What does the button switch look like? I was wondering if the tube might possibly be a protection for a wire for a kickdown or something. I know thats pretty early for something like that, but????

switch looks like a trunk light switch does
but it could just be something
shoved into end of line
correction:has hex on end about 3/8" or 7/16"
don't know if it's a fluid or vacuum line
you can see where it comes out of ******

Are you referring to the plug that is on top of the gearbox just behind the bell housing. If so it is a breather which usually had a loose cover over it to stop dirt getting in. There is no vacuum or electrical connection to a Fordo it is all controlled by the two levers on the drivers side. Kick down and gear selection.
Sounds to me like someone blocked up the breather by sticking a switch in it. Not a good idea.
These are a great simple gearbox that just keep on trucking.

it's line in this picture
it's behind front end of linkage you just mentioned
fitting in side of trans with a solid 3/16" line
coming out that makes a 90 degree turn
and heads forward towards motor
click on pic to enlarge
look close and can see flare nut fitting

As I recall, there is supposed to be a pressure test plug at that location (near the front of the Ford-o-matic case, just above the pan flange). They may have lost the pipe plug and replaced it with an old temp sending unit or something?

Although that is ia Truck transmission (looks like a '56), theres not any difference in the car and truck Ford-O's besides the converter housing. I am pretty sure that is a pressure test port. There is supposed to be a pipe plug in there.
You say that 3/16 tubing is coming out of that fitting? Its hard to see because the passing gear link is blocking the view.
There is no good reason to do a pressure test from above, since the adjustment is made from below. ???

yes it's a line coming out of there
( brake line size )
tomorrow i'll go ahead and:
1 move linkage out of the way
2 brush off a little
3 take pic's from side again and top view
4 take pic of other end with 'mystery' fitting

As others have said. You don't need this line. Unscrew it and plug it. Maybe someone wanted to bamboozle everyone and ran a pressure gauge from this port. None of the Fordos I have run a line from there. They all have a bung in that location.
Regards

It seems obvious to me that someone probably tried to use that port for a cooling line.
Weather it would work or not I have no clue.

daves 55 sedan
'(near the front of the Ford-o-matic case, just above the pan flange)'
that one probably does have pipe plug in it
( under coating of dust )
this tapped hole is higher up on passenger side
zero time to take pic's today
will get it done tomorry:)

The mid 50s truck FOMs had a cooler mounted on the transmission that had lines coming out of fittings on the right side of transmission.Probably what you have there is a transmission that had that cooler.I don't know if the later trucks had this cooler. The car FOMs never did use that type of cooler.

here's are pic's of whole thing
my bad only one fitting there
and looks like owner put it
up there to test anytime he felt like it
