What are the fitment differences between the 177 and the 250? Will a 250 bolt in to replace a 177? Thanks, new area for me......goodplace to find information on them?
The 250's are physically taller. There is something about the water pump and front pulley, oil pan and pump. My parents had one in an early Maverick. Sure, made it a nice car. Lot of torque compared to 200's. Might check with https://fordsix.com/
The 170 was a stroked version of the original Falcon 144 I6. The 200 was originally manufactured on the same 4-main plan form of the of the 144/170 design but is was upgraded to 7 mains just a few years later. The 250 is a stroked version of the 200 but has the same characteristics. I'm not sure about the motor mounts since the late 60s & early 70s vehicle designs that used the thrift master were so much different that the early Falcons but Ford made a lot of their mountings to retrofit. Transmissions changed too but the bolt up designs remained similar as far as the block is concerned. The 250 is definitely a taller motor but the front to rear dimension should be the same. A lot of this stuff does bolt together but there is always some little thing that required a mod of some type. They are all considered the small block six. The big block sixes are the 240 and 300.
Ford changed a lot of the transmission bolt ups for the 1965 & 66 model years. The early 2-speed aluminum case Ford-O-Matic is a different critter than the later C4 that replaced it for 1964 & 65. The manual transmissions went to the butterfly pattern in that time frame too. Top loaders replaced the early narrow pattern Borg Warner designs.
