Ford Greyhound 1934

I am looking for a 1934 Ford Greyhound hood ornament for sale and there are many for sale. How do I know that it is a Don Sommers replica and that it is an original? The replicas of which there are many for sale have front paws like boxing gloves and a tail connected to the back leg.

This is a Don Sommer 1934 Ford Greyhound Radiator Cap.

Reproduction Die-cast 1934 Ford Greyhound Radiator Cap.
This particular Cap was broken and has been repaired, as you can see.

The Original Greyhounds had free standing tails as does the Don Sommer Reproduction.
On the cheaper Die-Cast Reproductions, the tail is joined to the legs.

Yes, I am writing about it, but what is the difference between the original and the Don Sommers replica? I know that there are different materials in production.

Being confused most of the time now I could use some help here. Did Ford make a Greyhound cap for the 1934 Ford? If not, all would be aftermarket to me. I have always thought that the greyhound cap distracted from the most beautiful grille ever put on an automobile!!!!!! Let the fireworks begin LOL.

Ford offered the Greyhound for the 1934 Model Year only. Those you see on other than '34's are after market reproductions. Stant made the ornament for Ford. The Don Sommer reproduction ornaments were made of stainless steel...

Thanks AGAIN Pete. I went to my 33/34 book and found the picture. Like I first mentioned, confusion is now a part of daily life!

The greyhound posted above with the separate tail is not don sommer but rather John Dillon Sr. and cast from brass and chrome plated.

If I see a Greyhound for sale somewhere and it will be for sale. What should I watch out for? What does it have to have so that I know it's original?

Here is an original 1934 Greyhound. LOOK closely SIR. Jon Dillon Repros have many more ribs. Don Sommer Greyhounds have the ribs cut in ,not embossed. The originals because are diecast are smooth underneath on rad cap side.Don Sommer 's are rough cause they are SS casting. The detail on the flair under the right hind leg is not crisp on Sommer's.Compare the tail closely Sommer's shape is not quite right. There is an original for sale on THE HAMB ,very expensive ,but has been rechromed.

This is the type of knowledge that I truly respect. Thank you!

So the original and the Don Sommers replica have the same numbers on the bottom but the only difference is that it has different ribs? The replica has ribs as if they were engraved. If I run my finger over them, I can feel them.
