Ford A Engine rebuild kit

Hello
I am living in Switzerland and driving a Ford Phaeton 1930.
This Sunday piston number 3 broke. I now want to totally rebuild my motor.

Here my question:
Which supplier can you recommend and has the best quality of enginge rebuild kits or the best quality of pistons?

Thanks for any help

Best regards
Eric

Eric: I prefer Egge pistons. http://www.egge.com/ I also recommend Antique Engines, Skokie, IL USA as a overhauler or at least their inserted rods and their insert bearing kits. They have a web site as well. The remaining parts are available at Bratton's Model A Parts. Gar Williams

Eric,

You will have to find a shop in Europe that is familiar with pouring babbit bearings if you want to completely rebuild your engine. The connecting rod (big ends) and the crankshaft main "bearings" are babbit and it is poured in a molten state into mandrels and then machined to the correct dimensions. There are many shops in the USA that perform this service and are familiar with the Model A rebuilding specifications and can do the entire rebuild but your shipping will add considerable expense to the job.

He might have better luck getting the block machined for inserts. That way he could just hire a good machinist that does not need be familiar with pouring babbit.

You might find the babbit in good shape and not need to redo or replace. Your first job is to disassemble and inspect the engine and transmission for damaged and out of specification parts. Try to determine why the piston has broken.

Silverghost , at the top of the page is a Sticky thread with all the websites of all suppliers.

I suggest that you go there and click on the two model A club sites .
They both have international chapters in several countries .

Click on their chapters and you will find contact info for clubs in Sweden and others , I dont know who is closer to you .

You will find a club that will help you with your engine , it is your best bet .

There are several members on here with us that are in Germany , that might be closer to you , that could help you with the parts you will need to get her back on the road .

Hope this helps you Pop's

There are several good suppliers of parts. Setting up for inserts does eliminate the need for someone to pour babbitt but surely there is someone there that does that. But like Tinu says perhaps having it done in the US would be an option. There are several shops on the East coast that do excellent work. We have used Schwalms in PA, and Antique Engine in IL, but there are more available.

I would think that by the time you ordered parts from different suppliers and had the parts shipped to Switzerland and then had all your machine work done there that you'd be better off ordering a complete rebuilt engine from Antique Engine rebuilders in Skokie and have shipped to you.

Hello all together
first I like to thank you all for your help and fast response. I am suprised how helpfull you all are.
I yesterday disassembled an old spare engine and brought it today to a grinding plant near my home. There is a specialist (nearly 70) who knows the Ford Motors). He promissed me to analyze the parts next week and give me a first recommendation.

All pistons need to be replaced and the babitts too.

I will keep you informed.

Thank you very much.

Eric

I live in Switzerland as well and have a Model A I restored by myself.
There is one Model A rebuilder with some Model A engine experience I know personally, Swiss quailty, but we're talking about Swiss price level too...

So I would recommend you what I did: I had my engine rebuild in the US where is more experience, but less expensive. However, good quaility is nowhere free, but I can give you my recommendation:
http://www.jandm-machine.com/
Visit their website and / or ask me again, even personally (I live close to Aarau).
I know the shop owner and also vistied their shop - best you can get in the US (you can get a lot over there, but also a lot of junk)...

Martin

Shipping would be about 400 one way.
Hello Martin
Where do you live in Aarau?
I restored the car myself too and plan to do the engine mostly by my own.

Perhaps we will meet us once with our cars. I'm member of the SMVC.

Best regards
