Ford 8" offset?

The only reason I know of is to line up the pinion with the output shaft of the trans like most rear ends...

On the 9" the differential housing appears to be centered between axle ends but the 8" is not centered; or am I looking at this wrong?

I believe that you will find the axle shafts on a 9" different lengths also (most, but not all). This is to center the pinion centerline with the trans output shaft centerline. If it is not offset the driveshaft not run straight back.

Or am I misunderstanding the question?

So, if I understand correctly; when I install this rear end in my '36 the driveshaft will be centered in the floor pan drive shaft tunnel? When I look at the "Banjo" diff.& pinion shaft in the '36 now it appears to be centered between the axle housing ends. I never realized it, maybe most diffs. are off center?
