Ford 8" 3rd member removal?

Thanks for replying, am having problems getting the axles out of the housing; video shows after removing 4 bolts from backing plate axle should pull out by hand, although I believe it was a Ford 9". Is my problem because the bearing is pressed onto the axle?

Try this - put the drum on backwards, put the lug nuts on backwards but do not tighten them up - leave them loose at the ends of the threads.

Put the drum and against the axle and pull quickly and with all your might. This might provide enough leverage for the axle to come out.

Two things you can try to get the axles out.
1 put the drum on backwards (with brake surface out) and put 3 nuts back on with only a few threads. Pull drum sharply a coupla times.
2 If that doesn't work, put the plate that holds the axle in place back on, but install nuts on about 1/2 the thickness of the nuts. Then you get a chain with a link that fits over a wheel stud. Make sure you give it enough slack, and whip it like you would a rope, and it should pop the axle loose. Then undo the nuts that hold the plate on, and the axle should come right out

OR go and beg, borrow, steal a slide hammer.

I'll give that a try, great idea!

Parklane, did as you suggested, couple of righteous whacks with "deadfall" hammer on edge of drum and the axles came right out. Thanks for the tip, it worked great and saved me some money too!
