When did Ford go to 2 brush generators? I may have the year wrong, but I thought mine was a '59. It is a 6 volt, positive ground. I have used it for many years , on my Model A, with a 3 coil, positive ground, voltage regulator, with no issues. Thanks

6 volt positive ground would be '55 or earlier.
Ford changed to 12v negative ground for their street vehicles in '56.

1938 was the year they started planning on going to the 2-brush voltage controller regulated generator, It was originally for cars that were equipped with AM radio sets. The Deluxe cars had them in 1939 as standard equipment. In 1940, they became standard equipment for most Ford products. They are capable of putting out a lot more amperage for accessories than what the old 3-brush generators could handle. The standard 3-brush generator could only put out around 15-amps max just using a battery for a regulator. The early model A powerhouse generator could put out as much as 20-amps but they were somewhat expensive to produce so the Auto-Lite cylinder shaped types became standard equipment by mid 1929.

Ford stuck with generators until more electrically equipped models started gaining popularity in the late 50s. The alternators took over completely by the mid 60s.
