FNG question on steering column removal

This is on a 1949 Mercury. How do I remove the steering column from the gear housing? I just need to pull it enough to pull the body off the frame.

Thanks

(sorry if this is a dumb question, I just want to do it right the first time w/o whacking it with a hammer)

Bill, FNG is a military term, it stands for "F' n New Guy", a term of endearment in the Army  LOL

The column and steering shaft do not come off the gear box.
Disconnect the pitman arm from the tie-rod and all the other shift and wiring connections including the dash connection, Then disconnect the gear box from the frame.
The gear-box and shaft assy. can then be pulled up and out of the car. ( unless you want to raise the car high enough to pull it out the bottom )

As for the removal of the steering column, I can't answer that just yet but, I have to do the same to our '49 Cosmopolitan, hopefully in the near future. Both the Merc & Lincoln have the internal shift mechanism which makes things interesting to say the least...;)
