flywheel inspection plate orientation

Really simple and stupid question here from a new Model A owner. I am replacing the oil pan gasket on my 1931 cc pickup, but the "lower" flywheel inspection cover was not there when I bought the truck. I bought a replacement cover that I will install during the pan gasket change, but am unsure which way the half moon cover installs: with the lip forward towards the oil pan or with the lip backwards towards the transmission. I have seen photos online of the flywheel housing with a cover installed and there are pictures showing it both ways (these are ads selling used flywheel housings with the inspection plate attached). I just need to know which way it should go before I get it all tore apart and go to reassemble. Thanks ... Doug

Doug - The lip goes away from the flywheel housing, flat surface goes towards the flywheel housing.

I cut the lower bolt shorter to fit and leave the lock washer out . Never had the bolt to back out over about 40 years various vehicles

John in Suffolk County England .

If you are going to pull the pan, you may find it easier to install the inspection plate before you reinstall the pan. Those three bolts holding the inspection plate on are a bit of a pain to install with adult-sized fingers. Or at least run them in first with the pan and inspection plate off to be sure the threads are good. It’s not unheard of to have the bolt holes in the flywheel cover stripped.
