Flywheel / clutch area noise

After I lift my foot off the clutch pedal, there is a loud whining sound. Push the clutch pedal down again and the noise stops. Happens both when in gear and in neutral.

Any initial thoughts?

Thanks.

When the noise is there with clutch disengaged, it's the throw out bearing. When the noise is there with clutch engaged then it's in the input gearing somewhere. In neutral, with clutch engaged, the input and counter shaft cluster are both turning so the main input bearing and both counter shaft bearings are turning. The small bearing inside the input shaft is also in play and some of the modern replacements for these have been problematic. It just depends on whether it was overhauled in the modern era or not on that input to main shaft bearing but any of them can wear out. Long periods of inactivity can allow corrosion to affect the main input bearing.

As others have suggested, it’s likely the throw out bearing. May as well replace the pilot bearing and clutch disk while you have the engine out.

Remove the floorboard mat or carpet and remove the 2 screws on the bell housing inspection cover and with the engine running you'll definitely hear the throw out bearing screeching in there if that's what it is. You can watch the throwout bearing as you put pressure on the clutch pedal with your hand and releasing it. You can also grease the bearing while you are there but if it is making noise the damage is already done. Greasing it will buy you some time before you have to replace it. Remember because of the closed driveline you have to either pull the engine or the rear end and transmission to be able to remove the throw out bearing.

Does the pedal have any free-play ? If so, how much ? If there is free-play the release bearing should not be turning, therefore no noise from it.
Remove the floorboards and inspection cover to take a look as mentioned.
Sounds like an input bearing problem.

I would drop the rear end.

Replace clutch, pressure plate, throw out and pilot bears. While at it., replace the rear spring shackles.

Sounds like a lot in parts, but down the road it will save you future problems and time.

Enjoy.

I recently found that the roller bearing in the transmission that goes between the input shaft and the main shaft had completely fallen apart. This was evidenced by a very loud rattling noise with the engine idling and the clutch engaged but transmission in neutral.

We thought it was something in the engine. Took the engine out and found nothing, but happened to turn the input shaft of the transmission by hand while the engine was out, and the feel was unmistakeable. At that point, getting the transmission out and apart was a relatively easy task. Replaced all three sets of roller bearings. The quality of those bearings and where to get them is a whole other topic....... For now, I am back in business.

Sounds like the throw-out bearing is worn out.

I disagree. When the clutch pedal is up (clutch engaged), the throw out bearing should not be spinning. The throwout bearing shouldn't make noise when it is not spinning.

Only when the pedal in depressed (clutch disengaged), the throwout bearing spins and makes noise when bad.

See post#4 for possible problem areas.

The throw out bearing only rotates when the clutch pedal is depressed with pressure on the clutch cover fingers. The symptoms reported don't indicate that. The same goes for the pilot bearing.

I agree with these two posts. I don't think it is the throwout bearing.
