Flywheel center bearing

My flywheel has a brass or maybe bronze bushing in the center where the transmission shaf slides into. I thought this was a ball bearing type unit. What should I do? Order a ball bearing or is it ok to use the bronze bush.

thanks

Alan

In a previous post, other people pointed out that you will never have trouble with the bushing, whereas a seized ball bearing could become a big problem... THAT said, I prefer the ball bearing for the tighter tolerance... Karl

You can use either one, I prefer the bronze bushing, someday when the bearing goes out, it is out. if the bronze bushing starts going out, it gives you more time to think about it.

I use the shielded bearings and have never had a problem. NAPA part #6203-2RST.
You may find it interesting to note this is the exact bearing used in the front of the generator. Most decent part stores will have this bearing in stock.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I'm going back together on a 39 Merc. and having a lot of fun. I will starting it up soon if no snags. Got to have a hernia fixed in 3 weeks so I trying to get the old motor back together before the Doc gets a hold of me. I will keep posted on the engine progress and thanks again.
