Flow problems with eddie meyer head

I should clarify my statement about the oil pump being a potentail problem. While most people will tell you a hi-volume pump is not necessary for a stock or near stock flathead build, I don't think it will cause any problems like a SBC hi-capacity pump can.

Send your Mallory out to Bubba and have him set it up for you. You will be glad you did. They come from the factory with way to much total advance. When you get it back set your timing at total advance at the rpm he says. Its sounds like your timing is retared now.

I think "quickchange34" is referring to the advance curve build into the distributor while you are talking static advance, two different things. Most new flathead distributor these days come with a SBC advance curve (34 degrees when a flathead only wants 22) which will give way too much total advance at speed. The only solution to get it to run right at cruise is to retard the initial static timing which causes the overheating. It is the advance curve (weights and springs) that need changing.

I've also found that the Mallory's I've recurved, the sbc curve in them is also very slow. To far and to slow, not what the flatmotor likes at all.

Thanks for the info,i found an old but complete harmon collins 1400 in the dark recess of my pops parts rack. it should have the right curve , and it looks cool:cool:

Why would mallory do such a thing, it wont fit a stove bolt. different springs and fly weight's? what the color code for the springs and the weight of fly weights in gram's.

Because people buy them, is a simple answer. Don't know for certain though.
But they do.
There 8BA type is just a sbc turned to fit the flathead. Still has the sbc curve. I have also curved a couple of the front mount (pre 49 type) type Mallorys, they also had a slow to far curve sbc style. Personal I don't know why a company isn't interested in doing the job right. The front mount type was a new body and some parts ignition, not just an adaption of an existing ignition, like the 8BA one. Why didn't they finish the job and put a flathead curve in it? Goodness knows.

what do you think about the harmon collins? worth it? only problem I can tkink of is availibility of replacment parts

The Harman Collins is a good distributor. You will have to use a second coil. The Bendix points, the rotor and the cap are available it is just the intermediate cap that is not reproduced. Bubba can set up the H&C for you also.

As Terry said, the rotors are now being reproduced. The crab caps that Bob Drake is now selling will also work on the H&C, although the firing order numbers printed on front of the cap will be incorrect for H&C, but they could be remarked. The guy who is reproducing the rotor is also planning to reproduce the inner plastic part. Bendix points for these distributors can be purchased at aircraft service facilities.

Here are some previous posts on H&C distributors:

I'm running a 36LB with the same heads and Eddie Meyer two carb high rise intake with 2 97's and Potvin Super 3/4 cam. Had Bubba rebuild the dizzy and initially ran the motor as he had the dizzy timed--it ran hot. I finally figured out you need more advance with a "bigger" cam, so I set the initial timing as far as it would go--it made world of difference--more power and it runs cool even when idling in hot weather. Just my experience with a very similar setup. Good Luck. Rod

no ping from detonation? are you running supreme grade gas? could small diameter plug wire contribute to problems?

Going to that lower gear ration will also step up heating issues. The more the engine lugs, the hotter it gets. IMHO the 4.11 is a 50 mph gear. I have a 3:78 in my 32 with a stock 221 34/5 engine and it will run 65-70 but a lot better at 55 or so. On long interstate gradual hills you can see the temp gauge rising.

Why would you run supreme grade of gas in a flathead, is your compression ration that high? Higher grades of gas are only needed with high CR.
