Flathead year ID!

I have a 38 1 ton, but it has a stuck motor. I bought a rebuilt motor on eBay (buyer beware!) the seller thought it might be a 38, I'm guessing it to be 41. But I'd like to know for sure. The pulley off my 38 is too small, the crank on the rebuilt is about an 1/8" bigger, and my distributor would need an extention to reach the camshaft. The number on the bell housing is K1851 and it has 59A. Is there a definitive way to tell the year of a FH.

Change out the timing cover to the one from your old engine. You'll need to replace the rope seal in the cover, but you won't need to disturb the lower seal. You'll also need to use a cam extension, available from most antique Ford dealers.

You can get a 42 to 48 distributor (two bolt) easy enough from the E-pay or check with Bubba, They can be set up with a crab cap and are a little easier to work on than the old divers helmet 3-bolt style. It would save removing a 2-bolt cover to install a 3-bolt cover. Just a thought anyway. If it already has a 3-bolt cover, you'll just need the little extension adapter.
